The term ‘clean beauty’ is used to call beauty products that do not have toxic ingredients, being safe for our skin and health. This movement also defends sustainable consumption, as products classified as clean are concerned with the environment at the time of their production.
However, it does not necessarily mean that the product is natural, organic or green. Since, there are some plants or natural ingredients that can be toxic. Mineral oil is a good example of a natural ingredient that can be harmful to our health. And there are also synthetic ingredients that are non-toxic and so can be safely used in a clean product.
The same thinking goes for organic products. A clean product can contain organic ingredients but it can also fully contain non-organic ingredients that are safe for our health. Green products, on the other hand, are those that take into account the environment, being vegan and eco-friendly, in which case a product considered clean may contain an animal-derived ingredient (honey or beeswax, for example) making it not necessarily green . This is not to say that one is better than the other, each one brings a different concept but one that can easily be confused with the other.
In summary
Natural - contains ingredients derived from nature (animal, mineral or plant), remember that not every natural ingredient is safe or better;
Organic - just like in food, organic products are produced without pesticides that are harmful to health;
Green - considers the impact it will have on the environment, thinking about the packaging, the way it is produced and how it can be disposed of;
Clean - products that have safe and non-carcinogenic ingredients, which can be natural or synthetic, organic or non-organic, derived from animals or not.
A 'clean' product also has transparency in its packaging, that is, it does not contain any mysterious or “hidden” ingredients in the ingredient list.
We as consumers need to be informed about what we are buying and what we are putting on our body and face.
